Dublin Electrician FAQ

Answers to the questions homeowners, landlords and businesses ask before booking electrical work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about rewiring, emergency call-outs, fuse board upgrades, testing, and Safe Electric certification in Dublin.

If you’re unsure what you need, start here. These questions cover the most common safety signs, certification requirements, and what to expect from a registered electrical contractor.

Do I need a Safe Electric registered electrician?

For domestic restricted electrical works in Ireland, you should use a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC). This helps ensure the work is completed safely, insured, and certified where required.

What is a Safe Electric Completion Certificate?

A Completion Certificate is issued by a REC for electrical works (excluding minor works) to confirm compliance with Ireland’s National Rules for Electrical Installations. Always ask for your copy after the job is complete.

When is a completion certificate typically required?

Typical cases include a rewire, new circuits, alterations/extensions, fuse board upgrades, and certain reconnection scenarios. If you’re unsure, ask before work begins.

What are the signs a house may need rewiring?

Common signs include frequent tripping, flickering lights, warm sockets, burning smells, old rewirable fuses, rubber/fabric wiring, and very low socket counts. Older homes with no known upgrade should be inspected.

Should I upgrade my fuse board before rewiring?

Not always. A modern board on unsafe old wiring can give false confidence. The wiring should be assessed first so you get the right solution, not just the fastest one.

What should I do if the fuse board trips repeatedly?

Don’t keep resetting it. Repeated tripping can indicate a fault, moisture ingress, overload, or insulation breakdown. Switch off the affected circuit if you can do so safely, and contact an electrician.

What should I do if I smell burning from a socket or fuse board?

Treat it as urgent. If safe, turn off the main switch, avoid touching the fitting, and contact an electrician immediately. If there is smoke or fire risk, call emergency services.

What is an EICR / Periodic Inspection Report?

It’s a structured inspection and test of an existing installation—think of it as an electrical health check. It can cover consumer unit condition, circuit identification, insulation resistance, RCD operation, earthing and bonding, polarity and visible defects.

Do you cover commercial premises as well as domestic?

Yes—commercial fit-outs, maintenance, upgrades, and fault finding across sectors including offices, retail, hospitality, schools, nursing homes and more.

What details help you quote faster?

Send Dublin area, property type, service needed, urgency, and photos if available. For commercial jobs, include access times and any drawings/scope you have.

How long does a typical fuse board upgrade take?

Many upgrades are completed in a half day including testing and labelling, but timing depends on the number of circuits and whether earthing/bonding or meter tails need attention.

What’s the difference between MCB, RCD and RCBO?

An MCB protects against overload/short-circuit. An RCD trips on earth leakage for shock protection. An RCBO combines both protections on a single circuit—often cleaner fault-finding and less nuisance tripping.

My lights flicker—what does it usually mean?

It can be as simple as a lamp/driver issue, but persistent flicker may indicate a loose connection, circuit loading, or a fault that needs testing—especially if paired with tripping or warm fittings.

Can you fault-find a circuit that trips only sometimes?

Yes. Intermittent faults are common (moisture, damaged accessories, appliance issues). The goal is a safe, evidence-led diagnosis using appropriate test methods, not guesswork.

Do you work in apartments as well as houses?

Yes—apartments, duplexes and managed buildings. Where needed, we coordinate access and isolate supplies safely.

Can you help before a renovation or extension starts?

Absolutely. Early planning avoids rework—ideal time to map socket counts, kitchen loads, heating controls, future-proofing, and any EV/solar preparation.

Do I need more sockets in modern Dublin homes?

Many older properties are under-provisioned. More sockets can reduce extension leads (a common risk), improve layout, and support home offices and kitchen appliances safely.

Can you upgrade lighting to LED and improve brightness?

Yes—LED upgrades, exterior/security lighting layouts, and advice on drivers/dimmers so the finished result is clean, efficient and flicker-free.

Why do sockets or switches feel warm?

Warmth can indicate a loose termination, overload, or deteriorated accessory. Because heat is how electrical fires start, it should be checked promptly—especially if there’s discolouration or a smell.

Do you provide written quotations?

Yes. For planned work you’ll receive a written quotation so you can compare scope properly and avoid surprises.

Can you work outside normal hours for businesses?

Often yes—commercial work is frequently scheduled around access windows to reduce downtime. Tell us your preferred hours.

Do you cover Dublin City and County?

Yes—Dublin City and County, including northside/southside areas and surrounding suburbs. Send your Eircode or area name for quick confirmation.

What should I send on WhatsApp to get a faster answer?

A photo/video of the issue (socket, fuse board, scorch marks), your area in Dublin, and a sentence on what’s happening (e.g. “trips when kettle runs”) helps us triage quickly.

Are you insured?

Yes—use a properly insured contractor for peace of mind, especially for rewires, consumer unit work and commercial projects.

Can you test and certify after remedial works?

Yes. After repairs/upgrades, appropriate testing can confirm the installation is safe and performing as intended.

What is earthing and bonding, and why does it matter?

Correct earthing and equipotential bonding reduce shock risk and help protective devices operate correctly. It’s a key part of safe installations and is checked during upgrades and inspections.

Can you install surge protection or extra safety devices?

Depending on your installation and risk profile, additional protection (like surge protection) can be discussed during a fuse board upgrade or rewire planning.
